Lives & Works in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire
Joana Choumali studied graphic arts in Casablanca, Morocco, and worked as an art director in an advertising agency before embarking on her photography career. Her works mainly consist of conceptual portraits, mixed media and documentary photography. Much of Choumali’s art focuses on Africa and the things that she learns about the innumerable cultures by which she is surrounded.
In her most recent works, Choumali embroiders directly on images, completing the act of creating the photograph image with slow and meditative and deeply personal gestures. She has exhibited her work around the world. On 13 November 2019, she became the first African winner of the Eight Prix Pictet for her series Ça va aller (It will be ok) on this cycle’s theme of ‘Hope’.
Joana Choumali will be presented by Loft Art Gallery.
