Jim Chuchu
Born in 1982 in Nairobi, Kenya. Lives in Nairobi
Jim Chuchu is a visual artist, filmmaker, and musician. He is also co-founder and Creative Director of the NEST, a multidisciplinary art space in Nairobi, and a member of the NEST Collective. Chuchu’s directional debut, the short film Homecoming, premiered at the Durban International Film in Durban, South Africa, in 2013; and has since toured other significant film festivals including the Toronto International Film Festival in Canada in 2013; and International Film Festival Rotterdam in the Netherlands, in 2014. One of Chuchu’s most recent films Stories of Our Lives (2014), pertaining to the harsh realities of LGBTQ life in Kenya, premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2014. It was later selected for screening at, among others, the BFI Flare: London LGBT Film Festival in London, UK in 2015; and Berlinale 2015: the 65th Berlin International Film Festival in Berlin, Germany, where Chuchu received the Teddy Award – Special Jury Award 2015. His photographic works were included in the exhibition Making Africa: A Continent of Contemporary Design at the Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein, Germany, in 2015.
