James Muriuki is a Nairobi-based artist who works primarily with photographic media. His practice revolves around the transition of society and the development of rapidly evolving urban spaces. Often exploring the confluence of interdependent happenings in an ever-changing social landscape, Muriuki utilises forms of architecture and structures as visual elements as well as metaphorical symbols in order to question the viewer. Muriuki’s work has been exhibited and collected worldwide and included in several publications. He has collaborated with numerous artists, attended residencies and workshops internationally, and is also a grants recipient. Additionally, Muriuki has curated exhibitions individually and collaboratively in Nairobi and abroad. At present, he is experimenting with motion, video, sound, and installation for a commissioned work at the Museum of Architecture and Design in Stockholm, Sweden.
