Frank Marshall

Frank Marshall spent his childhood in multiple parts of the country. While it would seem that nothing predestined Marshall to become a photographer, everything changed in 2008 when he accompanied a metal band on their one-time tour of Gaborone, the capital of Botswana. It was here that Marshall was first introduced to the local heavy metal community. Fascinated by their interpretation of a counter-culture often associated with Eurocentric music, he returned to document this microcosmic subculture within its locality of Sub-Saharan Africa. Marshall later submitted his reportage for his thesis at the Tshwane University of Technology in Pretoria, from which he graduated in 2010. Based on the series, Marshall was chosen as one of the top ten finalists for the Sony World Photography Organization Student Competition.

In July 2011, his first solo exhibition Renegades, featuring the striking photographs, took place at Rooke Gallery in Johannesburg, and has furthered journeyed to several galleries in the USA such as Bekris Gallery in Los Angeles in 2012 and M.I.A Gallery in Seattle in 2013.
