Ehikhamenor, Victor
Born in 1970 in Udomi-Ewessan, Nigeria. Lives and works in Lagos, Nigeria and Maryland, USA
Victor Ehikhamenor’s practice encompasses painting, drawing, photography, sculpture and installation, as well as hand-perforated works on paper. Hailing from Edo State, the historic seat of the Benin Empire, he draws inspiration from the dual aesthetic and spiritual traditions which infused his upbringing, using imagery and iconography from both Edo traditions and Catholicism. Ehikhamenor’s signature patterning is a mélange of gestural abstraction and stylised forms revealing portraits, objects and writing systems. This patterning is used on multiple scales from paintings to immersive installations, which unfolds across exhibition spaces as meditative encounters. Solo exhibitions have taken place at Center for Contemporary Art (CCA), Lagos (2011), among others. His work was included in the 12th Dak’Art – Biennale de l’Art Africain Contemporain, Dakar (2016) and Biennale Jogja XIII (2015), as well as being shown at the 56th edition of La Biennale di Venezia, Venice, as part of the German Pavilion (2015). In 2017 he is one of three artists to exhibit as part of the first Nigerian Pavilion at the 57th edition.
