Eddy Kamuanga Ilunga
Born 1991 in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo
Lives and works between Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo and Brussels, Belgium
Eddy Kamuanga Ilunga’s haunting paintings provide an imaginative forum where centuries-old traditions encounter mass-communication technologies in a compelling meeting of opposites. In his work, Ilunga explores the seismic shifts in the economic, political, and social identity of the Democratic Republic of Congo that have been taking place since colonialism. Ilunga was long-listed for the FT/OppenheimerFunds Emerging Voices Awards in 2016. In 2020, Ilunga was named in Apollo ‘40 Under 40’ as a significant young artist coming out of Africa, and in 2021, his work was the lead image for the Summer Exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts, coordinated by Yinka Shonibare. An extensive monograph by Rizzoli on Eddy Kamuanga Ilunga will be published in October 2022.
