Diouf, Mbaye Babacar
Born in 1983 in Pekine, Senegal. Lives and works in Dakar, Senegal
Diouf’s work is marked by his passion for semiotics. With his felt pen or pencil, the artist draws on paper a succession of symbols, creating a mysterious, even metaphysical language. According to him, the sign is fundamental because it characterises itself humanity; as a tool of our given consciousness, it helped mankind to communicate, to build his history, to make visible the invisible forces etc. The rhythm spontaneously given by Diouf to his figures reproduces the effect of a weaving whose distinct elements are mutually reinforced. Their details thus evoke different components of a same whole, such as multiple pores of the skin, notes that form music or even the atoms of the material. As a metaphor for the fate of men, Diouf traces the trajectory of societies, and thus put humans at the centre of his creation. Mbaye Babacar Diouf graduated from the Ecole Nationale des Arts (ENA) of Dakar. His work was part of the official selection of the last Dakar Biennale (2016).
