April Kamunde
Lives & Works in Nairobi, Kenya
April Kamunde is a painter who works primarily in oils to create paintings that tell intimate stories. From a personal and feminist angle, Kamunde’s recent body of work explores notions of rest. Her paintings are inspired by personal reflections on feelings of weariness, her reaction to a rapidly changing world, and her goal to live a successful and fulfilling life in the fast-paced megacity of Nairobi. Through soft and delicate brush strokes, Kamunde’s subjects, placed into a natural environment, radiate a gentle presence. Owing to its autobiographical origins, Kamunde’s work is relatable across audiences as it depicts universal experiences. Kamunde has shown in Walking the Edge at Afriart Gallery, 2022, Shapes of Water, Afriart Gallery, 2023, and Eastern Voices: Contemporary Art from East Africa, Addis Fine Art, London, 2023. She participated in INVESTEC Cape Town Art Fair and African Galleries Now x Artsy in 2023. April Kamunde will be presented by Afriart Gallery.
