Abou Traoré
Lives & Works in Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso
Abou Traoré comes from a long line of blacksmiths. At the age of 10, he learnt the lost-wax technique from his father. In 1983, he began sculpting under his own name. Between 1984-1991, he was a member of the Groupe Fuzion with Swiss and French sculptors, exhibiting throughout Europe. Traoré's sculptures explore the longstanding Bobo tradition of animal masks and modern syncretism. He seeks to ease tensions and remind us of the values of coexistence, tradition and respect for the environment. His inspiration comes from the schematic representation of the animal spirit and its transformation towards abstraction. Exhibitions include Au pays des Hommes intègres, Galerie CHRISTOPHE PERSON, Dakar (2024); Biennale Internationale de Sculpture - BISO, Ouagadougou (2023); Feel the Spirit, Brussels African Art Center, Brussels (2022) and Grafic Africa, Le CUBE, Piasa, Paris (2018). In 1990, he won the 1st prize during the Semaine nationale de la culture, SNC Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso. Abou Traoré will be presented by Christophe Person.
